Creative Editorial Layout

Spring 2023 | Advanced Graphic Design

I was challenged to lay out an article in a creative way. I chose an article about the wage gap between men and women to explore a topic relevant to my business major. I also chose this topic because I wanted to create a layout that would help bring awareness to this topic. This project prioritized:

  1. Creativity

  2. Representation/Editorial Illustration

  3. Alternative Type Layout (not a standard grid like you did in the previous exercise)

For this preparatory exercise, I did an analysis of two different magazines to understand their grid structures. After that, I found an article and wrote the appropriate elements: headline, deck, kicker, byline and folio. I then completed a few sketches of type column explorations ultimately deciding to expand on the 6-grid and 12-grid structures I had sketched.

After completing this exercise, I was tasked with using my knowledge of type settings to create an editorial layout about an article of my choice.

Critques

After presenting my explorations, I received some critiques. One critique was that I should use the images of the men on money, but the side profile was not distinctly gendered. So, I should incorporate the elements still but change them to become the background of a check. Another critique I received was that my iterations were too stark and did not have enough color in them.
