Deconstructive Activism

Spring 2023 | Advanced Graphic Design

This poster utilized a postmodern design aesthetic, influenced by the early-90s style of deconstructivism. Deconstructivism is about taking meaning from the feeling of your design choices rather than the things people can cognitively interpret on the page. The design is from a period when digital was a new medium being explored. Deconstructivism has more allowances than physical processes do, which enables more emotions to be expressed through the work produced.

This project was focused on exploring the work's emotional qualities but also emphasized chance. I explored aleatoric, or random chance, within the design process. To do this successfully, I needed to do some physical deconstruction of elements.

Katherine McCoy

Katherine McCoy worked at many design firms throughout her career and became an educator later in her career. Her work drew inspiration from linguistics and literary theories. She was greatly inspired by semantics, pragmatics and syntactic and worked to incorporate all three elements into her designs.

New Wave Graphic Design

New wave design is a design approach that defies grid-based arrangements. The most notable characteristics include inconsistent letterspacing, varying type weights within single words and type set at non-right angles. This break in text meant that the type could be set center, ragged left, ragged right or chaotic.

Dada Graphic Design

This style of design was popular in the early 1900s. Visual arts, literature, poetry, art manifestoes, art theory, and theater were all elements incorporated into the designs. Dada mainly focused on anti-war politics through a rejection of industry standards of what art was considered to be.

Breadth & Depth Explorations

Critiques

After presenting my breadth and depth explorations, I recieved some feedback. One of the suggestions made to me was that my side profile that I had used was not clear enough, so I should look for a better side profile. Another suggestion that I had made to me was to not use some of the color schemes that I had chosen to use. I was also told that my text needed to be more of the focal point, so I worked to ensure the text was one of the main focuses of my design.
